Photographers call it golden hour for a reason. That window right before sunset when the light goes warm and everything looks like it was lit by a film crew. In New York, it turns the glass on every building into copper. The Hudson catches it. The harbor catches it. Even the bridges look different.
Now put yourself above all of that in a helicopter.
FlyNYON runs sunset departure times on our NYC helicopter tours — something none of the other operators in the area offer. You take off in daylight, fly over Manhattan as the sun drops toward the horizon, and land after the city has started to light up. You get two versions of the skyline in one flight.

Midday flights are great. You see everything clearly, the landmarks are easy to spot, the photos come out sharp. No complaints.
Sunset flights are a different animal.
The light does something to Manhattan that’s hard to describe until you’ve seen it from above. The western-facing buildings turn gold. The East River reflects the sky. One World Trade goes from silver to this deep orange. And because you’re at altitude, you can actually watch the shadow line creep across the city in real time — west side lit, east side fading.
Then the city lights start coming on. Not all at once. In clusters. Times Square first, then Midtown fills in, then the bridges. By the time you’re heading back, you’ve watched the whole transition — daylight Manhattan becoming nighttime Manhattan — and you saw it from a seat that maybe 50 people that day got to sit in.
If you care about photography at all, this is the flight to book. Golden hour light from 2,000 feet over Manhattan — there’s nowhere else you can get that shot.
FlyNYON is known for doors-off helicopter rides — flying with the doors removed so there’s nothing between you and the view. Most people book this during the day.
At sunset, it’s a different experience. The wind is usually calmer in the evening. The light is warmer. And the photos you get from a doors-off helicopter during golden hour genuinely look like they were taken from a movie set. No window glare, no reflections, just open air and the city turning gold below you.
Our doors-off NYC helicopter tour starts at $227 per seat for the 16-minute experience, or $407 for the 30-minute classic route. Both are available at sunset — just select the “Sunset” time slot when you book.
The route covers the highlights of Manhattan from the air:
The exact look changes with the season and the weather. A clear summer sunset and a hazy October sunset are both worth flying for — they’re just different.
Sunset time shifts throughout the year, obviously. In summer, golden hour starts around 7:30pm. In winter, it’s closer to 4:00pm. We adjust our evening departure times with the season, so the sunset slots on our booking calendar are always aligned with the actual golden hour window.
These flights fill up faster than midday departures, especially on weekends and during the summer months. If you have a specific date — a birthday, anniversary, date night — book it as soon as you know.
Head to our New York booking page, choose your flight type, and pick a date. The evening departure times are your sunset window. All flights leave from Kearny, NJ — about 15 minutes from Midtown, free parking on site.
